It’s been a rough week for the entertainment world, with the deaths of David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and others. These are the times we need a laugh most, and Angel From Hell is delivering in spades. With less plot to establish this week, I really felt the chemistry- and the comedy- between everyone.

Tonight’s episode is (shockingly) all about facing one’s fears. For Allison, these include clowns, spiders (both of which Amy will tackle), and, most importantly, interacting again with an old friend named Kelly, whom Allison wronged by insulting her boyfriend at about the worst possible moment.

In a first interaction with Amy, Allison tries to challenge the whole angel thing by asking what angels really do. Apparently, there are nine worlds in this universe. Also? Angels are really, really good at catching things. Anyway. Amy wastes no time continuing to pry into Amy’s personal life and soon learns all about Kelly. She surprises Allison a couple times with her lesser fears- by dressing herself as a clown and a dog as a spider- but we all know what her biggest goal is.

Another thing angels do? Set up “coincidences”. In this case, Amy arranges for Allison and Kelly to meet at a restaurant. It does not go well. But Allison, now determined, pulls some string to arrange a meeting between Kelly and her childhood pop idol, Joey McIntyre. Which also does not go well, because it happens at the moment Kelly’s boyfriend- you know, the one Allison insulted to start this whole mess- is about to propose. Well, I mean, it was definitely a nice thought, though.

Amy quickly works out that there’s more to Allison’s need to make up with Kelly. Between her mother’s death and breaking up with Evan, this feels like just losing another person. She’s really afraid of being alone. And so Amy encourages her to simply apologize. That works a lot better. So does Amy tricking Allison into buying one of Kelly’s works of art. A photograph of a clown. Yeah. At least the dog dressed as a spider was cute. This, I’m guessing, not so much.

There’s a subplot involving Allison’s father and brother seeking revenge against her ex. (“Don’t get mad, get Evan.”) Apparently they’ve done this a lot, which makes me wonder just how many previous relationships have ended badly for Allison. Just as they’re about to publicly humiliate Evan during an open mic night, he starts singing a song. A song about them. Apparently, they find this alarming gesture touching. This might not be the last we see of Evan.

Next Week: Go With Your Gut
