Fair warning: this episode will involve, among other things, attacks on friends of new agent Stephen Walker and Diana Reid, still plagued by schizophrenia and now also by Alzheimer’s, visiting her son in prison. You’re probably going to want to grab some Kleenex for some of these scenes- and maybe also a paper bag to breathe into, because things only ever seem to get worse for Spencer, not better- and now we’re in the final few episodes of the season.

After briefly believing he was indeed a murder, Reid remembered being framed not by Mr. Scratch, but by a woman. Is she a second victim or an accomplice? Emily says they should rest before they try to find out (and ignores her own word), so Walker goes home to his wife and talks about the case. But before they can relax, he gets a call about a friend in the emergency room. The two used to work together (in Russia) and go a long way back. Now, he seems to have had a heart attack. But when Stephen sees an injection mark, he realizes Sam has actually been poisoned with radiation.

This probably isn’t a Mr. Scratch job. It’s more likely to be a Putin job. Yes, really. Walker reflects on his and Sam’s past and continues to try and figure out how it landed him here. Rossi and Emily talk to a Russian agent while Fiona (Emily’s lawyer friend) talks to Reid to tell him his trial has been pushed back. It might give them more time to find the real culprit, but that doesn’t help his mood much. Meanwhile, Sam continues to deteriorate and Garcia realizes that several others have fallen victim to the same situation. And then other man does as well, after being injected in the middle of the street.

All the victims were federal employees, but only Sam had connections to Russia. So the country is not the culprit (and their government won’t shut down this show), but the unsub is mimicking their methods. Walker talks to Sam again. He’s no longer a danger to others because of the radiation, but his prognosis is still not good. As another victim falls, Reid is rudely awakened by a guard who takes his journal and drags him from his cell, which is apparently how prisoners learn they have visitors now. And this one, of course, is his mother.

At first, Diana is confused- and then alarmed- about where she is, mentioning in the process that someone besides her nurse took her to the prison. When she learns the truth, she’s devastated. We return to Walker, who tells us about the new victim- and reveals that there’s little hope left for Sam. The new man doesn’t have an injection mark. Instead, he swallowed the poison, which was given to him by his wife (AKA our unsub). She’s going to have to attack someone else to throw off suspicion, so the team sets out to track her down. When they find her, she grabs a hostage, but Rossi shoots her dead.

With little time left, Sam begs Stephen to get his son. He manages to do so with moments to spare. When Sam passes, Stephen breaks down in his wife’s arms. In prison, Diana and Spencer shatter our hearts talking about his position and hers- how she’ll eventually forget him. They don’t even get a chance to hug before she’s forced to leave. And her nurse is- well, you’re going to have to look all the way back to season 3, where a young man was shot in front of Spencer by a father being egged on by his disturbed daughter. That daughter, Lindsay, takes Diana away, claiming to be a woman named Carol. Reid realizes just how bad this is- i.e., she was the woman who framed him- moments too late. Lindsay and his mother are gone.
