Just as Detective Bell and his girlfriend, Chantal, seemed about to break past their latest string of bad luck involving her ex-husband, Roy, she was attacked in her home and left on the floor for Bell to find. The good news is that she’s still alive. The bad news is…well, obvious, especially with the detective’s reaction. The prime suspect is Roy himself, of course, but the more we learn, the stranger things get- and the more dubious the actions of our heroes become.

Despite still being alive, poor Chantal has been beaten within an inch of that life, and Marcus is out for blood. The captain warns him against getting too involved- but Sherlock may be willing to do so on his behalf. Roy comes in for questioning and nobody is too happy to see him. Joan checks in on Bell and he mentions being in the hospital as a child when his mother was hit by a car. Later, he sees Roy coming in to visit his ex-wife, and things spiral. He’s sure looking guilty, but when Sherlock pulls some strings, he believes this is all a frame job. But the discovery is too late for Roy, who has been shot in a seeming suicide- which is almost certainly a set up itself.

Indeed, he was drugged before he was killed. Marcus knows that he should be considered a suspect, but he was at the hospital during the murder. Besides, it’s the same person who attacked Chantal that also killed Roy. It may well have been connected to his work as a private detective. Sherlock and Bell talk to the head of the agency and learn about Roy’s latest case. Prior to this, Sherlock remarks on Bell’s still-present rage towards Roy. The CEO helps (in a roundabout way) point to Roy’s possible target. The man denies guilt, but Sherlock knows he’s lying. He doesn’t think the guy will run, but that night, he seems to leave his home as Bell watches. Suddenly, he’s attacked- by a mysterious figure that turns out to be Sherlock.

He did this because he was sure Bell was going to do worse, and reassures his friend he’s covered his tracks well. The conversation getting still more serious, they talk about Marcus’s history of abuse at his father’s hands. His mother was never actually hit by a car. Rather, she was a victim, too. The next morning, Sherlock and Joan talk to an associate of their suspect to try and find evidence against him. The case starts to progress, and Chantal’s condition improves as well. But another revelations brings a new angle- Roy may have been blackmailing some of his rich clients, and this may the real reason for his murder (though not as directly as we’d think).

To pursue his new theory, Sherlock is going to need to need the help of the suspect’s ex-wife, who he’d been abusing. And the real killer…is the CEO of the private eye company. He was the actual blackmailer, and Roy found him out, demanding some of his own blackmail in return. And after hearing about Roy and Chantal, he thought he had a perfect story under which to fake a crime. This guy acts smooth at first, not realizing that Sherlock and the others are one step ahead of him. The episode ends with a touching conversation between Sherlock and Marcus- and the news that Chantal will continue to recover.
